Lat/Lon Help

Q: What is Lat/Lon?

A: Lat/Lon is short for Latitude and Longitude

Latitude gives the location of a place on Earth North or South of the Equator.

Latitude is an angular measurement ranging from 0° at the Equator to 90° at the poles.

Longitude describes the location of a place on Earth east or west of a north-south line called the Prime Meridian.

Longitude is given as an angular measurement ranging from 0° at the Prime Meridian to +180° eastward and -180° westward.

Q: How do I know the Lat/Lon of a petrol station or my HQ?

A: When you come to report a new pump price, just hit the "Lat Lon Finder" button and in a new window, you'll see a map, just drag it and zoom in to find the petrol station, hit select and then the lat/lon are filled in for you. Or you can use Google Earth, MultiMap or other web based mapping services to find a latitude and longitude. Google Earth and MultiMap are the only services described here.

Google Earth Petrol Prices Map Example

Google Earth is a free mapping application which is fascinating in itself, as well as providing a means to find Lat/Lon.

Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips

To use

Google Earth, you need to download their software which is a little bit like a sophisticated browser. Click on the Google Earth link to find out more.

You can also view a map of pump prices which can be viewed using Google Earth. Click on the pump prices button

To find lat/lon using Google Earth, simply zoom-in to find the place you want to locate (switching on the roads layer may help you). When you find the location, create a placemark (See Google help for information on how to do this), then click in the "advanced" checkbox, select the location tab and you will see the Latitude and Longtitude displayed. Simply carefully copy exactly what you see into the fields on our form. Be sure to include N,S,E or W to indicate North, South, East or West.

MultiMap

MultiMap is another useful mapping tool which can help you find locations, streets and directions.

It does not require a software download to use and has streetmap information, aerial photography and more.

To find lat/lon using

MultiMap, simply zoom-in to find the place you want to locate. When you find the location, click on the exact spot, then look below the map in the "Map Information" panel (under the adverts). You will see the Latitude and Longtitude displayed. Simply carefully copy exactly what you see (Either the format 52:28:32N and 0:33:21E or the decimal 52.4756 and 0.5559) into the fields on our form. Be sure to include N,S,E or W to indicate North, South, East or West if using the first format. Be sure to include the minus sign if present in the second format.

Why is the Map Slow to Load?

The map resource is provided by Google and is beyond the control of TaxiGas.

You may also have noticed that the hourglass cursor reverts to a point well before the map is loaded and you cannot scroll the page until the map is loaded.

These issues are beyond our control. We suggest you try the

Google Earth interface instead if you find these problems to cause too much inconvenience

Why Are TaxiGas Spamming Me?

We are not in the business of sending bulk unsolicited mail (spam).

In the past, our email address has been abused by spammers as a reply address, a technique known as "spoofing" (very easy to do, but potentially very damaging to the innocent party). People who do this are lower than vermin.

If you feel that you have received Spam (unsolicted bulk email) from our address, please forward it to us. We will investigate it but unfortunately there is usually nothing we can do about it.

We do not market drugs, pornography or anything else that spammers usually try to hawk over the internet.
