Cambridge Comedy Marquee or Pissfest?
I used to love Cambridge Comedy Marquee. This style of cabaret comedy venue started in an underground car-park under Mandella House. Nowadays it is presented in a marquee on Jesus Green. For years now I’ve been attending and in the early days several nights in the week that it ran.
I remember seeing some unknown acts who are now big names on the comedy circuit.
Now though it seems to be a pissfest.
Tonight 2 tables were reserved at the front by piss-artist modern day hippies who squirted drink or water at the compere. When you buy your tickets, seats cannot in theory be reserved. I don't know what these drunks did to wangle reservations, when I generally queue long before doors open to try and get a good seat.
It seems many people go out drinking before they get to the comedy marquee and turn up totally drunk. Don't get me wrong I like a few drinks myself, but generally when I get there.
The toilets are always the same, can't open and close the door of the stalls without contortion and this year even the men had to queue (about time I hear our sisters shout).
Now too if you wanted a pitcher of beer, it was served up in plastic milk cartons.
A year or so ago I wrote and pleaded with the organisers not to organise it the same week as the Edinburgh festival, since the quality of acts has been dropping (with some exceptions) but my pleas fell on deaf ears, and so we have less of a comedy festival and more of an excuse for chavs to get pissed in a tent it seems.
